The Weekend Cabin is located on a private family farm several miles north of rural Fayette, Missouri. Three generations have lived on this land, and another two spend time here. Scattered among the hills and woods are houses and cabins for various family members. Tucked away in the woods, this house is envisioned as a weekend and holiday retreat for family members who come to visit from the city and need to relax and recharge.
Nearly half of the farm’s acreage is hilly and wooded, and remains wild and untouched. With limited development, wildlife roams freely here, and feels comfortable enough to graze close to the existing cabins. This means that you can get up in the morning to see a flock of turkeys just yards from your window, or see a doe and her fawn walk past your front door.
The exterior materials were chosen to help it blend into the site, so regardless of your vantage point, the Weekend Cabin blends in with its surroundings. A wooden rain screen mimics the vertical orientation of the surrounding trees, and large windows reflect the trees as well. French doors opening onto a large deck allow for easy indoor-outdoor living. Because it is a second home for weekends and holidays, it has smaller bedrooms, placing greater emphasis on communal living space to encourage family bonding. The public spaces feature high ceilings, large windows, and an open floor plan. In addition, a loft rises above the rest of the house. Four walls of windows and built-in benches provide a space for lounging, nature-watching, or a nap in the sun.
